Supporting my collège in France

Update (31/12/22): I completed the 5000 recorded km today in the pouring rain!

Update (4/11/22): Since I started the campaign about a month ago I have reached my goal of raising €1000, but it doesn’t stop there. I still have to complete my 5000 km! Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far.

I would like to raise some money to support my school in Faucogney-et-la-Mer, France. Every year they organise a ‘tombola’, cake sales etc., but I want this contribution to be a surprise. This year it’s needed more than ever because budgets are tighter than ever. The money will go the ‘Foyer socio-educatif (FSE) du Collège Duplessis-Deville’ which is the organisation that supports the school and especially the extra-curricular activities that make it such a special place.* The Collège Duplessis-Deville now has 170 pupils, so it’s not the smallest secondary school in the départment of Haute-Saône anymore, but it is still small. The existence of the school is vital to the local community and its success has been in forging links locally, and with wider networks, attracting pupils from nine different départments, even from abroad (me). The school has special sections for cycling (that’s my section!), football and agriculture as well as several initiatives linking the school with the local community as part of the concept ‘collège ouvert’. In turn, these activities forge links between pupils of different ages and backgrounds. The school is run by the exceptional director, Rudy Cara, and I would like to thank him, my ‘camarades’ and my teachers for their dedication and the warm welcome I received when I joined in April 2022. If you want know exactly how that came about, click here …

Since I was four years old, I’ve dreamed of riding the Tour de France and of riding in a peloton my age. The Section cyclisme trains three times a week in school time together with our teachers and several volunteers. We’re out on quiet local roads that are often used in the Tour de France. Adults aren’t standing on the sidelines yelling at children — it could be a motto for the whole school: we ride together.

Since January I have recorded about 4000 km of cycling. I expect to complete 5000 km in 2022 and I’ll let you know when I’ve achieved it! My goal for fundraising is €1000. Below are some highlights of my year on two wheels so far, in the UK, in France and in Austria. I’m going to be be back in the UK for the winter for a spell of home-school and cyclocross. You can see the news at my blog.
